Get a wardrobe!

What should I wear? What do I wear? What will I wear? I have nothing to wear!

Yes, those questions that we've been asking ourselves since day 1 of picking out our own clothes carry over into your life as a model.

The outfit you wear to a casting and the clothing you show up with on set will help to set you apart from the rest of the pack.

It's important to begin stockpiling a deep and diverse wardrobe that will enable you to change looks on a dime. After all, you'll be an office worker one day and a luxury traveler the next.

Yes, it's true that on some sets, wardrobe will be provided. It's been my experience that, even on the bigger jobs, they ask you to bring some items from your own personal wardrobe.

First, let's talk about what you should wear to a casting. It's so fun and exciting to get an email about a casting that includes a breakdown, which is a description of the role. After all, your job is to get jobs and here's an opportunity to do just that!

MY ADVICE:

1. If there is a storyboard attached to the breakdown, check out how the writer has portrayed your character. What is he/she wearing? Go to your closet and try to mimic that as closely as possible.

2. If there is no storyboard but there is a script...look for clues in it. Where is the scene taking place? At home? At the park? Try to think about what you would be wearing if this was happening in real life.

3. No script and no storyboard? Search the breakdown for clues as to what you might be asked to do. What is the commercial for? Is it for laundry detergent? If so, then you'd probably be ok with an 'at-home casual' outfit.

4. Stay away from crazy patterns, big logos and busy outfits. Keep it simple. A jewel-toned top and jeans is usually a good choice. If the casting calls for business casual, a solid button down or sweater and nice pants/skirt will do.

5. Always, always have back up clothing in your car. You never know when you'll be asked to cast for a different role, another casting comes up while you're out or you just completely missed the mark with the outfit you chose.

Start with what you already have in your closet. Make sure it's clean and wrinkle-free. Then, hit up your local Goodwill or consignment store and pick up some gently used wardrobe pieces that are in mint condition for a small price.
